From Dust has been described as a combination of Populous and Black and White. Specifically, this game puts players in control of an omnipotent overseer who uses his powers over the planet’s elements to help revive an endangered tribe. Players will manipulate dust, water, and lava in tandem with vegetation to create terrain and landscapes.
I believe this game sounds quite intriguing. The concept reminds me a little of Avatar: The Last Airbender. A powerful person uses his power over the elements to save a tribe. I know Avatar is about more than just that, and this game has a completely different feel. The trailer showed a serious and somber take on the concept. Otherwise, not much is known about the game at this time. Whatever the case, hopefully From Dust will use terrain manipulation better than LucasArts’ over-simplified Fracture.
Despite having criticized the gaming industry for not supporting much creativity, Chahi was excited to take on this new project. From Dust appears to be quite different from any of Chahi’s previous games. I could be wrong, but I think a game based on Populous and Black and White developed by the guy who made Another World can’t lose.
Well, Ranters, what do you think of the name From Dust? And are you excited for it, or do you think it will go From Dust to dust?
From Dust is due to release sometime in 2011 for PC, Xbox Live Arcade, and the PlayStation Network.
