The Wii’s processing power and unique control scheme meant that developers really had to get creative when it came to developing content for the console. Straight porting of titles simply wasn’t possible because of the sheer difference in power between Nintendo’s machine and that of its competitors. Instead, developers had to invest in developing games from the ground up when they would release on the Wii.
Naturally then, the development process of new titles for a new console would be a big concern for any large developer, but Ubisoft has made it clear that they feel bringing games to the Wii 2 will not be difficult. During Ubisoft’s fiscal earnings call, CEO Yves Guillemot addressed questions about his plans for the upcoming console with some glowing statements.
What this essentially means is that part of the cost of developing for Nintendo’s next console will be offset by work already being developed for other consoles which will in turn be easy to bring over to Nintendo’s new tech.
Nintendo has made is clear that online play is something they want to support much better with their next console. With these comments, Guillemot may be confirming what Nintendo fans have been hoping to hear: Nintendo’s console will support the same online features that other consoles are offering. This would be a big boost in Nintendo’s favor with winning back some of the hardcore gamer crowd.
This likely means that titles we see coming to the Xbox 360 and PS3 in the next couple of years will also be seeing releases on the Wii 2, and with possible upgrades as well. Let’s not forget that Ghost Recon: Future Soldier was recently delayed, and it’s definitely possible that one reason for the delay to 2012 is so that it can see release on the Wii 2 when it launches.
