Chambers Bay Golf Course was firm and fast, and players struggled on the greens. Phil Mickelson hoped to get off to a quick start after a disappointing 4-over 74 on Friday, but bogeyed holes 2, 3 and 4 to fall further behind the leaders.

Past U.S. Open champions Jim Furyk and Angel Cabrera both went 5 over in their rounds and couldn’t get anything going.

Rory McIlroy looked like he was going to make an early move with two birdies in his first seven holes, and another close look on the 10th. He went on to miss the 3-footer on 10, and bogeyed the 11th to fall back to 3 over and likely out of contention.

Leaders Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed were to tee off about 5:50 p.m. ET.
