Making his first start since the BMW Championship late last month, the 15-time major winner will begin the tournament from tee No. 1 at 8:07 a.m. ET on Thursday.
A three-time U.S. Open winner, Woods doesn’t have particularly fond memories of Winged Foot, where he finished 29th at the PGA Championship in 1997 and then missed the cut at the U.S. Open in 2006—one of only three occasions Woods didn’t feature in the final two days at the tournament.
The need to manage his surgically-repaired back has seen Woods play just four tournaments since the PGA Tour resumed in spring allowing a three-month hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic and has not finished higher than 37th in those four starts.
In five U.S. Opens held at Winged Foot, only once has the winner finished with a score below par and Woods is under no illusion about the challenge the famous West Course will pose this week.
“The golf course is going to be hard,” Woods said. “It depends on how difficult they want to set up these pins to give us a chance at it. But with the forecast, it’s going to be difficult no matter what.”
Fresh from winning the Tour Championship and securing the $15 million cheque reserved to the winner of the FedEx Cup, world No. 1 Dustin Johnson will also start from the first tee alongside Bryson DeChambeau and Tony Finau at 1:16 p.m.
The trio will be followed at 1:27 p.m. by world No. 2 Jon Rahm, Paul Casey and Phil Mickelson, who hopes to finally capture the only major missing from his collection after finishing second at the U.S. Open on six occasions.
Defending champion Gary Woodland will be starting from tee No. 1 at 1:05 p.m. alongside reigning British Open champion Shane Lowry and 2019 U.S. Amateur champion Andy Ogletree.
Hideki Matsuyama, 2018 Masters winner Patrick Reed and three-time major winner Jordan Spieth, meanwhile, will get their tournament underway from tee No. 1 earlier in the day at 7:56 a.m.
Former U.S. Open champions Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose—who won the tournament in 2011 and 2013 respectively—will play alongside Adam Scott in the first two rounds, getting their tournament underway at 8:07 a.m. from tee No. 10. The trio will be preceded by former world No. 1 Jason Day, 2017 Masters winner Sergio Garcia and world No. 6 Webb Simpson.
