“Over 182,000 new child COVID-19 cases were reported last week, the highest weekly increase since the pandemic began,” based on data available on December 17 from 49 states, New York City, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and Guam that provided age distributions of cases, the AAP said. More than 1.8 million children in the U.S. have tested positive for COVID-19 since the outbreak began, with an overall rate of 2,420 cases per 100,000 children in the population....

However, with some states now starting to account for casualties potentially missed in previous counts, such as probable deaths from COVID-19 infection, the death count is likely to soar. So the hope of the U.S. death toll remaining at five figures is merely “optimistic,” warns American statistician Nate Silver. “Between the current wave of COVID-19 remaining bad in many states, the possibility of either a long plateau or a second wave, and states going back and counting deaths they missed originally, any projections that have 5-figure death tallies for the US this year seem optimistic,” Silver noted in a post Wednesday on his Twitter account....

Known as the “DPR Joker,” the hacker shared on his Telegram channel intelligence from November that he said was transmitted by the U.S. to the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The documents, published by the hacker on Tuesday, purportedly contain U.S. intelligence on the positions of Russian ships, aircraft, and the location of warehouses. Newsweek has reached out to U.S., Russian and Ukrainian authorities for comment. The hacker said a Russian patrol ship is located in the western part of the Black Sea while providing coordinates to Russian air defense systems in Luhansk, Kherson, and other regions....

“Today U.S. Senator Charles Schumer announced that the visa for Alta has been urgently approved and obtained, which will allow her and her U.S. citizen father, Mr. Abraham Fixsler, to travel to the United States and receive care,” a statement from the senator’s office said Friday. Alta, who cannot breathe or eat without medical care, has been on life support since her birth at a hospital in Manchester. Earlier this year, the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust asked to end her treatment, but her parents said that taking her off life support would go against their Jewish faith....

Unnamed soldiers who say they fought alongside the pair told British newspaper The Telegraph that Andy Tai Ngoc Huynh, 27, who served in the Marines, and Alexander Drueke, 39, an Iraq War veteran, disappeared during a fierce battle outside Kharkiv, in Ukraine’s north-east.
